We've Seen This One: Every Employer has Made a Bad Hire.
When an employee who has been with your company for several weeks is clearly underperforming and proving to be a “bad hire,” there are specific steps to take to fairly and ethically allow the person to leave. Also, there are steps to take to prevent making the same mistake again. Here are several significant improvements you can make at your organization, compliments of Captain HR.
When you’ve decided that you've made a bad hire, the termination process begins by first confirming that management has clearly and frequently communicated the expectations to the employee. Next, in partnership with HR, ensure the employee fully understands where they’re falling short. Ideally, this should all be done within the first 25 to 40 days.
Let’s be real; people know when they’re not performing well. They realize they’ll eventually be fired, so they’re stressed out, waiting for management’s decision to come down. When management finally decides to tell the employee ‘They’re being terminated,’ it can come as a welcome relief!
Still, once the final termination decision has been made, HR and the manager responsible for the hiring decision should use compassion, care, and a calm demeanor when speaking with the individual. Keep the meeting brief, private, and factual, clearly communicating the reason for termination and explaining ‘next steps.’
RETRO-ANALYSIS:
If your company truly wants to improve its hiring and retention practices, the next step is a complete Look-Back analysis of the process. It is one of the most important methods to use when wanting to improve your hiring and retention metrics.
Within a few days following the termination process, the hiring manager, HR Recruiter, and HR Business Partner (or Director) should together examine the entire interview process from start to finish.
